Fiji faces electric power crisis

11:17 am on 13 September 2003

Fiji is facing a major electric power crisis.

A long period of dry weather has caused water level at the main hydro dam at Monasavu to fall to within four metres of the critical level at which the generators would have to be shut down.

The state owned Fiji electricity Authority's executive chairman, Joe Mar has appealed to people to reduce their power consumption or face the possibility of selective rationing within a month.

The authority is also bringing in emergency generators and a prefabricated rubber dam for installation.

But it says these will result in substantial additional expenditure which was not planned and the authority may have to apply to be allowed to increase charges.
