Solomons to hold by-election 14 months after Geve murder

3:59 pm on 15 September 2003

The Solomon Islands Government has decided to hold a parliamentary by election for South Guadalcanal in late October for the seat that has been vacant since last year's killing of a government minister, Father Augustine Geve.

The Home Affairs minister, Clement Rojumana, says he'll announce the by election date tomorrow but has suggested October the 29th as a possibility.

Father Geve was shot dead in a killing claimed by rebel warlord Harold Keke who was arrested last month and charged with his murder last week.

The ruling People Alliance party says it will attempt to regain the South Guadalcanal seat because the late Father Geve was its MP.
