Fiji groups call for consumer boycott over cannery dispute

7:21 am on 17 September 2003

Two non-government organisations in Fiji have called for a global consumer boycott of products made by the state-owned Pacific Fishing Tuna cannery.

Radio Fiji says the call has been made by the Pacific Network on Globalisation, PANG, and the Ecumenical Centre for Research and Advocacy.

They say it is about time tuna consumers in the country and internationally make a stand against the appalling working conditions of cannery workers.

Several hundred workers, mainly indigenous Fijian women, have been on strike for six weeks over the company's refusal to honour an arbitration award, with no end to the dispute in sight.
