Fiji suspect confesses to fifth killing

5:38 am on 17 December 2003

A Fiji villager charged with the murder of four people in Ba last week is reported to have confessed to a fifth murder in Nadi earlier this year.

Police spokesman Mesake Koroi has told Radio Fiji that 23 year old Waisele Waqanivola has admitted killing a 38 year old woman at a settlement near Nadi in March and the attempted murder of a man at the same time.

Police had suspected Waqanivola of the murder of the woman in Nadi because both that crime and last week's Ba murders were committed in the same manner.

All the victims were bludgeoned to death.

Waqanivola has been remanded in custody until the 29th of this month as investigations continue.
