Wallisians move out of New Caledonian trouble spot

8:28 am on 17 September 2003

The last Wallisian families caught in a violent dispute over land with Kanaks in a New Caledonian town are now being moved.

30 families are reported to be leaving St Louis outside Noumea in a resettlement aimed at ending an ethnic conflict which has left 3 people dead in the past two years.

The armed stand-off led to severe restrictions of the movement of the Wallisians which left families divided.

A plan to move the 170 families was started to be implemented last year but last month there was renewed conflict in the area.
