A secondary school in North Malaita in Solomon Islands says it can continue operating because of support from the European Union.

The school at Adaua was closed for two years because of water shortages and the destruction of classrooms by vandals.

The Solomons Island Broadcasting Corporation says that after helping the school to rebuild facilties, the EU contributed funds to buy water tanks and school desks.

The Principal, John Irokesi, said much of the ethnic tension had been caused by Malitans who were not well educated.

He said it was important that all young Malaitans had access to good quality education to help avoid the problems of the past.
