The Fiji government is shortly to advertise 2,500 public service jobs which have remained unfilled because of a recruitment freeze imposed last year.
The Daily Post reports the decision to fill the jobs follows cabinet approval at a meeting in Levuka on Tuesday.
The secretary of the Public Service Commission, Ratu Tui Cavuilati, says the vacant posts are part of the civil service-approved establishment and have been provided for in the 2003 budget.
He says after advertising, ministries would undertake their own selection process because permanent secretaries now have the power to make their own appointments and promotions.
The secretary of the Fiji Public Service Association, Rajeshwar Singh, has welcomed the decision, saying it is long overdue and would lead to an improvement in services.
Mr Singh says the freeze resulted in a shortage of manpower in all ministries which was reflected in the poor and deteriorating standard of service.
