An appeal court in French Polynesia has given a life sentence to a 39-year-old woman for torturing and killing her three-year old son three years ago.

Angelina Aka appealed her thirty-year prison sentence on the grounds of her own abuse, saying she had herself been a rape victim as a child.

A psychologist who was a defence witness said her behaviour was that of person who was ill, irrespective of the fact that she was raped.

The appeal court ruled that she will have to serve a minimum of 22 years in jail.
