PNG to hold parliamentary by-election under new voting system

9:22 am on 27 September 2003

Papua New Guinea's Electoral Commission will use its new LPV voting system for a by-election in Central Province.

The by-election for the Abau seat was ordered by the Court of Disputed Returns after the defeated sitting member Kilroy Genia of the opposition People's Democratic Movement appealed against the election of Dr Puka Tema from the government's National Alliance.

Under the new LPV or Limited Preferential Voting system, voters can mark up to three candidates in order of preference.

In the former Optional Preferential Voting system voters could number their choices from one to whatever the list of candidates allowed.
