The Solomon Islands Foreign Minister Laurie Chan says the biggest multinational troop deployment in the South Pacific since World War II has broken the reign of gangsters and warlords.

He has told the General Assembly today that the RAMSI force has also given the country a chance to begin cleaning up rampant corruption.

Mr Chan says since the arrival of RAMSI in July law and order has been re-established and the government's finances are stabilising.
