The leadership of the Caledonian Union says the strategy used during this year's visit by the French president, Jacques Chirac, to New Caledonia was good.
The party's president, Pascal Naouna, says the protests seen during his visit were to get the French state to take note of the problems related to the implementation of the 1998 Noumea accord on greater autonomy.
Mr Naouna has told the local press that the accord has been violated by the ruling majority as it keeps failing to respect the principles of running a collegial government.
The weekend meeting of the party in Kouaoua was also aimed at preparing a congress of the FLNKS pro-independence movement in Kaala-Gomen next month ahead of the territory's elections next year.
