Fiji marks national day

4:50 pm on 10 October 2003

Fiji is marking its national day and the 33rd anniversary of independence today with celebrations on a scale not seen for many years.

Commemorative events are being held in most centre in Fiji but focus of celebrations is the new Sports City complex in Suva where displays, demonstrations, multi-cultural dancing and military parades will be seen.

The government has taken out newspaper supplements with the prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, outlining his administration's achievements.

The president, Ratu Josefa Iloilo, has awarded honours to people who have made outstanding contributions to Fiji or demonstrated exceptional bravery in the face of danger.

Among these is a New Zealander and former president of the Fiji Court of Appeal, Sir Maurice Casey, who has been made an Honorary Companion of the Order of Fiji.
