PNG government says no evidence of World War Two gold

The Papua New Guinea government says investigators have found no evidence of a fabled hoard of gold in New Ireland province

Earlier this month, PNG deployed soldiers and police to the remote island province to search for the rumoured gold, which many believed was a hoax.

For decades, tales of a massive stash of gold bullion left behind by Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, the commander-in-chief of the Japanese navy, have been handed down from generation to generation.

The PNG government has now confirmed the bullion does not exist
