Fiji's Native Land Trust Board introduces new clauses into lease contracts

11:15 am on 30 October 2003

Fiji's Native Land Trust Board has drawn up a new land lease contract under which farmers will not be allowed to join in harvest boycotts, strikes, and what it describes as "negative political and trade union activities".

The Fiji Times reports that the contract warns farmers particpating in these activities with immediate termination of their leases.

But the Labour Party spokesman, Lekh Ram Vyashoin, says the new clauses are a serious breach of the constitution, are biased and unfair to tenants.

The NLTB, which has refused to comment on the clause, controls about 90% of all land in Fiji and therefore manages almost all of the tens of thousands of leases.
