New Zealand's top policeman says he thinks New Zealand police will remain in Solomon Islands much longer than originally planned.

The police commissioner, Rob Robinson, has paid a 3-day visit to the 35 New Zealand police force members in Solomon Islands.

He says he is pleased to see how well accepted New Zealand police are in the country and the difference they have made in a short time.

Commissioner Robinson says New Zealand police may need to stay up to eight years.

"I've certainly spoken to Ministers ar home, that three to five years is a reasonable time frame, and it may even be a five to eight year commitment that New Zealand needs to make to bolster law enforcemant in this country."
