Top female Niue politician won't contest next election

Niue's top female politician and senior member of the opposition, O'Love Jacobsen, has announced she will not contest a common roll Legislative Assembly seat in the 2005 general election.

Mrs Jacobsen and her family are moving back to New Zealand before returning to Niue to retire, and she says there is a possibility she may put her name forward for the 2008 election.

Tipped several years ago as a potential future premier, the 51-year-old took leave of absence this year and worked in the Auckland mental health sector.

As a former health minister in the Frank Lui-led government, Mrs Jacobsen says will work in Niue's public health sector when she returns in 2005.
