Solomon Island villagers receive RAMSI bravery awards

11:20 am on 4 November 2003

Seven Solomon islanders who rescued three Australian soldiers caught in rough seas in August have been recognised for their bravery.

The commander of the Regional Assistance Mission military contingent, Lt Col Frewen, presented the seven with medallions and certificates in recognition of their bravery during an incident on the Weathercoast of Guadalcanal

Two Australian RAMSI soldiers lost their footing while crossing a rain-swollen creek and were swept away into the sea,

Local men from the village of Ngalato dragged the two from the sea as they floundered in heavy surf.

A third soldier who went to the aid of his comrades also got into difficulties and was rescued by a villager in a small dugout canoe.
