Western Pacific leaders meet in Palau

11:12 am on 6 November 2003

Four western Pacific leaders are gathering in Palau today ahead of a summit which will try to tackle problems common to all four nations.

The leaders of Palau, Yap State, Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas will make a six-monthly report on what they have done to improve health care, reduce the high cost of fuel and the high cost of travelling between the nations.

The Palau president, Tommy Remengesau, says it was decided that combining resources was the best way to tackle these problems, as well as other issues including how to boost tourism, improve telecommunications and manage a recycling programme.
