Fears body traffickers may be operating in Fiji

Fiji police are investigating claims that a group of body parts traffickers may be operating in the country.

This follows the abduction on Tuesday of a 16 year old boy from Lautoka who was anaesthetised by four men of Asian appearance wearing surgical masks and gloves and taken to a remote house in Ba.

The boy, Jared Anand, says when he became conscious his stomach had been shaved and he was in a room with three other beds in a hospital-like environment.

He escaped while his abductors were in another room and ran through bush and cane fields for a long time before reaching a house and calling the police.

Last week a 13 year old boy was abducted in Lautoka in similar circumstances but he also managed to escape his captors.

Police have confirmed they are are investigating whether an Asian group trafficking in body parts is now operating in Fiji.

The police spokesman, Mesake Koroi, has appealed to the public not to panic but remain calm.
