Meeting of western Pacific leaders deferred till later this month

12:16 pm on 7 November 2003

A meeting of four western Pacific leaders in Palau has been rescheduled after one of the participants suddenly became ill.

The leaders of Palau, Yap State, Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas meet each six months to present reports and possible solutions to regional problems such poor health care, the high cost of fuel and the high cost of travelling between the nations.

Other issues include how to boost tourism, improve telecommunications and manage a recycling programme.

Yesterday, shortly before the summit was about to begin, the Governor of Northern Marianas, Juan Babauta, was taken ill and officials decided to reschedule the meeting to later this month.
