The Niue Government is sending a representative to Asia this month to attend a five-day conference on chemicals.

MP Pokotoa Sipeli is flying to Bangkok to attend the first session of the preparatory committee for the development of a strategic approach to international chemicals management.

The Minister of Finance and Environment, Toke Talagi, says the trip is being funded by an international organisation but he was unable to name the sponsor.

"We attend a number of meetings via the international organisations that organise those meetings. we attend a lot of meetings which a lot of people would find a bit of an enigma relative to their appropriateness for our attendance, but that is for the government to decide."

Mr Talagi says Niue is a signatory to a number of conventions and is required to attend the meetings to ensure the nation's interests are satisfied.
