China criticises Kiribati moves to recognise Taiwan

The Chinese ambassador to Kiribati has expressed his country's concern over moves by the new government of Kiribati to establish diplomatic relations with Taiwan.

Kiribati announced yesterday that it was establishing diplomatic relations with Taiwan.

Ambassador Ma Shuxue says the move undermines the foundation of friendly co-operation between the two countries.

He says the Kiribati government has broken its solemn pledges to recognise the government of the Peoples Republic of China as the sole legitimate government representing China and Taiwan and should immediately repeal its decision
