Tongan prime minister to visit Malaita in Solomon Islands

2:14 pm on 11 November 2003

The Tongan prime minister, Prince 'Ulukalala Lavaka'ata, who arrives in Solomon Islands this afternoon for a three day visit has been given permission to visit North Malaita.

Clearance for the trip to Malaita was given by the Regional Assistance Mission forces despite a report that reached Honiara of high-powered weapons being concealed in a bush area of North Malaita.

It's not clear whether or not the guns have been located but the Royal visitor will be allowed to visit the Tongan platoon on duty in Malu'u.

Solomons radio says the prime minister will also address the Solomon Islands parliament.
