PNG speaker in probe over alleged Mexico trip

5:24 pm on 21 November 2003

The Speaker of the Papua New Guinea Parliament, Bill Skate, is being investigated for possible misconduct by the Ombudsman Commission amid claims he travelled to Mexico.

The National newspaper reports the probe is to determine if he defied a directive not to travel out of the country.

Mr Skate was delivered a letter on the day of his alleged departure for Mexico directing him not to travel on the grounds that the trip to an environment conference was unrelated to his duties.

The Chief Ombudsman, Ila Geno, says the directive was issued so that Mr Skate complied with the Leadership Code.
