PNG minister pushes hanging for worst criminals

11:28 am on 25 November 2003

The Papua New Guinea Social Welfare and Development Minister is calling for judges to fast track the hanging of the country's worst criminals.

Lady Carol Kidu is also advocating the use of Defence Force soldiers to perform executions.

She represents Moresby South, where a nine year old girl was recently abducted, raped then beaten to death.

Lady Kidu has told the Post Courier newspaper that capital punishment should be mandatory unless the judge finds extenuating circumstances that would warrant life imprisonment.

She says she is an advocate for human rights, but horrific crimes cannot be excused.
