Fresh bid in PNG to elect governor general

5:13 pm on 4 December 2003

The Papua New Guinea parliament is today due to elect a new governor general after the previous election was annulled.

Three candidates will contest the election. They are Sir Pato Kakaraya, Sir Paulias Matane and Sir Albert Kipalan who won the race in September.

But the Supreme Court nullified the result after finding that proper procedures set out by law were not followed, especially in the nomination process.

The court directed that the elections be held again to find a successor to Sir Silas Atopare.
