Vanuatu opposition to move fresh motion against Natapei government

4:37 pm on 4 December 2003

The Vanuatu opposition is this afternoon expected to go ahead with its motion of no confidence in the Government of Prime Minister Edward Natapei..

This follows last week's attempt to challenge the government, but that motion was withdrawn before any vote was held.

Today's move comes after a re-shuffle which has been the biggest party in the Parliament, the Union of Moderate Parties, dumped from the Coalition.

The Government had claimed that the UMP was not pulling its weight in the coalition and replaced it with the National United Party, the Greens and independents.

The newly appointed foreign minister, Moana Carcasses, who leads the Green Party, says the ruling coalition is united and the motion will fail.

Local commentators agree that the Coalition is unlikely to be threatened.
