Call in PNG for people in Gulf province to work together to end crime on the Hiritano Highway

2:32 pm on 9 December 2003

The Gulf Governor in Papua New Guinea, Chris Haiveta, has called on the people of the province to work together to put an end to crime along the Hiritano Highway.

Speaking at the opening of a trading operation, Mr Haiveta said there was a lack of understanding and co-operation between the people of Gulf and Mekeo.

He said because of this travellers have become victims of armed hold-ups and intimidation along the highway.

Mr Haiveta is negotiating financing for the development of the Malalaua to Kerema portion of the highway.

It is estimated that it will cost over 30-million US dollars.
