French navy honours sailor member of Laperouse expedition

The French navy has held a ceremony in New Caledonia for the unknown sailor who died as part of the 18th century expedition to Melanesia led by Marc de Laperouse.

The commander at the base in Noumea, Franck Josse, says the remains of the French sailor recently discovered in Solomon Islands symbolises all the sailors who have disappeared.

The ceremony was held in the presence of a member of the Laperouse family.

The remains which were found at the site where the Laperouse expedition lost a vessel.

They will be sent to Paris for analysis.
