New Caledonia's USTKE union ends congress

2:08 pm on 12 December 2003

New Caledonia's USTKE union has ended its 11th congress with the re-election of Gerard Jodar as its head and by choosing a younger and smaller executive .

Mr Jodar says the 16 members of the bureau are much younger because the organisation needed new blood.

He told the Nouvelles Caledoniennes that he wants non-Kanaks to join his union because it is not only their interest but also in their country's.

There has been an international attendance, with participants saying they want the rich to contribute more to the poor.

Among them, a Cuban delegate said despite of the economic blockade by the US, Cubans don't die of famine and all of them have access to education.
