Bank strike in New Caledonia suspended

12:17 pm on 17 December 2003

Striking bank employees in New Caledonia have suspended their action.

Press reports say this meant that some bank branches were no longer blockaded, with unionists only picketing the banks.

The reports say the strike has had little effect on the running of the banks.

The unions are pressing for a range of demands, including a three-percent pay increase, improved conditions and a closure of the branches on Saturdays.
