Marshall Islands voters file six electoral recount petitions

10:45 am on 24 December 2003

Six petitions for vote recounts have been filed with the Marshall Islands chief electoral officer

Four of the petitions are for recounts in parliamentary seats while the other two involve a mayoralty and one council race.

Assistant attorney general, Posesi Bloomfield, says a decision should be issued later this week as to whether the electoral office will agree to any of the recount petitions.

He indicated that although virtually every request for recounts in the past had been denied, he is in favour of a recount in races that were decided by just a handful of votes

Candidates have until next Monday to challenge this year's results before final tallys are approved and the winners can be sworn in.
