Technival to produce fertilizer from fish waste in French Polynesia

11:17 am on 30 December 2003

The French Polynesia government has signed an agreement with a company called Technival to produce and commercialise solid fertilizer made from fish wastes.

Fishing Minister Patricia Grand says the goal is to produce some 50 tonnes of fertilizer from 60 tonnes of fish wastes.

Ms Grand says there is definite potential because French Polynesia's commercial fishing fleet produces some 700 tonnes of fish wastes per year.

Officials of the government's Rural Development Department and an agricultural school on Moorea Island will test the resulting products.
