A tropical depression developing in Vanuatu

4:18 pm on 30 December 2003

The Vanuatu Meteorological service says a tropical depression is extending from the Solomons through Vanuatu and over the Fiji group.

Winds close to the centre are weak at the moment, but expected to develop slowly over the next 24 to 48 hours.

However rain and thunderstorms are expected to continue to affect Vanuatu for some time yet.

At this stage the system does not pose any threat to Vanuatu, but heavy rainfall will continue causing flooding of low lying and flood plain areas.

And strong winds of 30 to 40 knots east and south easterly are expected well offshore to the easter water of the north and central Vanuatu group with moderate to heavy swells.

The Vanuatu Meterological service is monitoring the situation, and warning people to take extra care.
