Solomons Teachers Union calling for prime minister to resign

4:17 pm on 30 December 2003

Solomon Islands teachers are calling for the voluntary resignation of prime minister Sir Allan Kamakeza, given his final say over pay talks for public servants.

This follows his move to vary the salary increase awarded by the Trade Disputes Panel and rejecting the Cost of Living adjustment.

The SIBC reports Fred Taika, the general secretary of the National Teachers Association or SINTA, saying public servants have lost confidence in the prime minister.

He says if Sir Allan does not re-instate what the Trade Disputes Panel had awarded in full, as well as claims submitted by SINTA and other public sector unions, workers would resort to a nationwide strike early next year.
