Widespread cyclone damage in American Samoa

In American Samoa, some families, whose homes have been damaged by the waves, have been taking shelter in primary schools.

The acting governor has activated the territorial disaster emergency plan..putting all emergency services on alert.

Power authority employees have been working since yesterday evening to deal with lines brought down by falling trees and power cuts.

A boy suffered severe burns to his face after he stepped on apower line that had been brought down by the cyclone.

The power authority has warned of prolonged cuts due to storm damage.

This also means that pumped water has been cut off to some villages on the main island of Tutuila.

All sea and air transport to and around Samoa and American Samoa has been shut down.

Residents are still being urged to stay away from the coast as there may be very high tides.
