Vanuatu government hits back over PM rumours

9:28 pm on 6 January 2004

Government officials in Vanuatu have hit back over rumours that the Prime Minister, Edward Natapei, is about to be toppled.

A Government spokesman, Daniel Bangtor, says suggestions by the Leader of the Opposition about a change of government are childish speculation.

Mr Bangtor says those responsible for initiating such rumours should recognise that they have a duty to build up the nation, rather than destroy it through spreading lies.

He says the Prime Minister's office has received assurances from partners of the current coalition government that the present coalition arrangement is solid.

He says that the government intends to do everything possible to solidify its position and to work towards completing its current term.
