Homes in Tonga suffer damage

7:38 am on 7 January 2004

A communications officer from the Tongan island of Niuatoputapu, says that houses in several villages are now roofless due to Cyclone Heta,

Ta'e'iloa Kilioni says the village of Vaipoa has been particularly damaged.

He says winds of between 80 to 100 knots had caused much of the damage with trees uprooted and fruit downed.

About 9 brick and timber houses in Vaipoa and several Tongan fales have been destroyed.

No casualties have been reported however Mr Kilioni says he believes there will be a shortage in the food supply for the islanders.
