The latest assessment of cyclone damage in American Samoa shows that more than 4,000 homes were either completely destroyed or face major damage from Cyclone Heta.

The figure was given by the reverend Atina'e Sheck, the spokesman of the American Samoan chapter of the American Red Cross.

The spokesman says 600 houses were completely destroyed on Tutuila alone as other islands are yet to be assessed.

The assessment has reportedly been slowed because of a lack of volunteers.

The Red Cross says each home and family will have to be visited to determine their immediate needs.
