Solomon Islands hails end to gun threat

11:38 am on 20 January 2004

The Solomon Islands National Peace Council says guns are no longer a threat to the country.

Chairman Paul Tovua says together with the Regional Assistance Mission, or RAMSI, they've managed to collect about three thousand eight hundred guns since July last year.

He says all the guns the Council was aware of in the community have been handed in to authorities.

"Not a problem as it used to before RAMSI got into here. There will be a problem if we didn't recover or retrieve whatever high power guns somewhere down the line after RAMSI have gone, but at the moment certainly they pose no great problems to us."

Paul Tovua says they have quashed the gun culture created by Harold Keke and the Malaita Eagle Force militia.
