Fiji to announce army commander decision today

5:40 am on 29 January 2004

Fiji's president is expected to announce a decision on the future of the country's military commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, today.

The home affairs minister, Joketani Cokanasiga, has already met the president and given him his recommendation about the commander's decision.

But President Iloilo has asked for a meeting with both the minister and Commodore Bainimarama at Government House this morning.

A public announcment will be made shortly afterwards.

Meanwhile, another report says the military spokesman who has been at the forefront of putting the public case why Commodore Bainimarama should be retained, is himself likely to be replaced.

Radio Fiji says Warrant Officer Neumi Leweni has confirmed that the change is being considered but would not comment further.
