Solomons opposition wants foreign minister sacked over unauthorised pay deal

8:37 am on 29 January 2004

The Solomon Islands opposition leader has called for the sacking of the foreign minister, Laurie Chan, for allegedly failing to follow cabinet and parliamentary procedures.

John Garo told Solomon Islands radio that Mr Chan had signed a contract to pay an advisor, Mark Emery, a salary equivalent of 1.2 million Solomon Islands dollars a year or more than 160,000 US dollars.

Mr Garo says the contract had not been vetted and Mr Chan should be sacked.

He says while the opposition has been cooperating with the government, the actions of Mr Chan only help to destroy the relationship.
