The Australian Federal Police Commissioner Bill Keelty says the Royal Solomon Islands Police could take four years to become independent of international assistance.

He says while the first 55 Australian police from the initial contingent sent to the Solomons six months ago returned home last night, they had been replaced.

Mr Keelty says this is a long-term mission and the work is now moving into the consolidation phase.
