Power expected to be restored in Tuvalu this afternoon after 7 days interruption

Three thousand residents in the southern half of Funafuti, the main atoll in Tuvalu, should have their power restored this afternoon, a week after a major power cable was damaged.

Homes, businesses, government offices and the radio station have all been without electricity since last Friday, but portable generators have powered the water supply since Tuesday.

An investigation into how the high voltage cable was damaged is still continuing.

One theory, yet to be confirmed, is that telephone cable layers accidentally cut the power cable.
