Solomon Islands speaker announces members of special select committee

9:36 am on 31 January 2004

The speaker of parliament in Solomon Islands has announced the members of a special select committee to investigate the disappearance of 10 Kwai men on Guadalcanal's Weathercoast two years ago.

Sir Peter Kenilorea says members of the committee were drawn both within and outside parliament, in line with standing orders.

He says the appointment of the committee followed parliament's unanimous passing of a private motion in November by the MP for East Kwai, Alfred Sasako.

He says the investigation will be limited to determining who sent the men to the Weathercoast.

"The basic intention for it is to clear some of the politicians' names, or otherwise of the names who have been implicated in the incident"

The committee has been given one month to complete its task and its report will be put to parliament through the Minister for National Reconciliation and Peace.
