U.S. department of education to investigate misuse of federal funds in American Samoa

The U.S. government is asking to see documents and records that an American Samoan select committee obtained during an investigation into the territory's education department.

This follows the revelation that federal funds earmarked for certain projects had been diverted for other purposes, including the use of donations to funerals or to pay for personal loans.

The investigative arm of the U.S. department of education says it wants copies of the documents and records.

USDOE investigative agent, Michael Rodrigues, says the agency wants to determine if there was any misuse of federal funds.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is reported to have alerted the U.S. department of education about the committee's findings.

The FBI is also currently investigating allegations of misuse and abuse of public funds and corruption within the territorial government.
