A team of consultants from India which has been studying Fiji's ailing sugar industry says it can be salvaged.

The Indian Sugar Technology Mission has been reviewing all facets of the industry, including the restructuring of the Fiji Sugar Corporation.

The mission's leader, Jiwan Bhagat, has told the prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, that Fiji's sugar industry has the potential to increase production and become competitive.

Meanwhile, police are continuing investigations into an almost 5 million US dollar fraud involving the technically bankrupt corporation mills at Penang and Ba.
