Solomons PM staying quiet over jailed minister

7:54 am on 5 February 2004

The Prime Minister of Solomon Islands, Sir Allen Kemakeza, is giving no indication of his reaction to the jailing of a friend, Cabinet Minister Daniel Fa'afanua, or who will replace him and when.

Fa'afanua has been jailed for three years for his role in an extortion by armed men who demanded money from the publisher of the Solomon Star newspaper.

A spokesman for the Prime Minister says Fa'afunua will definitely be replaced in Cabinet but it's not clear yet who by or when.

Fa'afunua was a member of the People's Alliance Party and the spokesman said he expected another party member would become the replacement.

The spokesman says the matter could be discussed at a Cabinet meeting likely to be held today.

There will also be a by-election in Fa'afanua's North Malaita constituency.
