Scarce accommodation in Samoa slows promotion

The prime minister of Samoa says the country's promotion overseas is being held back deliberately because of a lack of hotel rooms of an international standard.

Speaking at the opening of the Treasure Garden Hotel at Savalalo, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi said of the 800 rooms available in the country, only 300 meet high international standards.

Tuilaepa says if Samoa is advertised too much and people are encouraged to visit, a jumbo jet may arrive without all of the guest being able to get appropriate rooms.

The Treasure Garden Hotel was completed last month - ten months after construction began.

The owner Eddie Chen says all materials for the project were imported from China at a cost of more than 400,000 US dollars.
