HIV/AIDS called a bigger threat than terrorism in Fiji

4:51 pm on 12 February 2004

Fiji's parliament has been told that HIV-AIDS is a worse threat to the country than terrorism.

The Labour MP, Dr Guna-sagaran Gounder also called for the government to divert more resources to combat the HIV threat.

Dr Gounder says parliamentarians shy away from controversial issues for fear of being challenged by various social groups and organisations.

He told parliament politicians need to face reality instead of thinking issues surrounding sexual health are "western" and just threaten cultural values.

There are 140 confirmed cases of HIV but health authorities fear the number of undetected cases is actually in the thousands.
